IGLFA 2009 Tournament Format

The IGLFA 2009 Official Gay Soccer World Championship is currently expecting the men's tournament to have 26 teams with 10 playing in Division 1 and 16 playing in Division 2.  If this remains constant, then we'll have a very simple tournament structure.  The two things that the tournamnet committee can promise is that every team will be guaranteed a minimum of 5 games, and no 2 teams from the same club will be drawn together in the first round grouping.

If our current list of teams remains solid, for the preliminary round, Division I will be broken into 2 groups of 5, while Division II will be 4 groups of 4.  Over Monday and Tuesday at the state of hte art Maryland Soccerplex, teams will play each of their group-mates with Two 35-minute-half games per day.  Teams in Division II will play a team in another group for their 4th game.  From that point, teams will be ranked and the top 8 teams (4 from each division I group and 2 from each Division II group) will qualify for the quarterfinals.  The Quarter Finals will be run on Thursday, and will be run as full 45-minute-half games.  All teams that don't make the playoffs will be given a consolation game taht will also be played on Thursday at the Soccerplex

From there, the tournament will move in the DC to Trinity Washington Univeristy.  The semifinal round for each division will be Friday, and the grand final will follow on Saturday.  Both rounds will be 45-minute-half game.

Overall, the pitches for this years tournament will be top notch!  Half of the games at the Soccerplex will be played on natural grass, while the other half will be played on high quality field turf.  Some people will prefer to play on the field turf with turf shoes, but rest assured, regular cleats will be fine to play with.

We look forward to having you at IGLFA 2009!!

Getting Around in DC - Transportation to and from Tournament.

The IGLFA 2009 Tournament Committee is very excited to have so many players from around the world coming to Washington DC this summer for the tournament.  One of the great things about the Washington Metropolitan Area is that while it is a big city - geographically - it's also pretty easy to get around.

The Washington Metro runs throughout the city and surrounding Maryland / Virginia suburbs with both by bus and train (the Metro or subway).  You best travel option in DC is The Metro and you can buy a 7-Day Fast Pass MetroCard for only $39.  This pass provided unlimited travel during those 7 days to anywhere the trains go!  As the fare to the SoccerPlex from the Host Hotel is $4.50 each way, the 7-Day unlimited pass is the most economical option.  You can purchase your Metrocard in advance from the WMATA Online Store, or purchase your pass at any metrorail station.

During the tournament, transportation to and from the SoccerPlex will be provided from the Shady Grove Metro Station by EYRE Bus Service.  IGLFA 2009 has partnered with EYRE and will be transporting players and guests to the fields, but it will be players responsibility to get to the Shady Grove Metro.  This is both the most economical and fastest way to transport players through Washington DC's famed traffic.   If you have any questions about transportation, please direct your questions to one of our Tournament Directors.

Sponsor Spotlight - Arena Stage!

IGLFA 2009 Would like to welcome Arena Stage as an Official Sponsor of this year's Gay Soccer World Championship!

Arena Stage is the largest theater in the US that is dedicated to American plays and playwrites.  Now in it's sixth decade, Arena Stage serves a diverse annual audience of over 200,000.

During the IGLFA 2009 Tournament, Arena Stage is showcasing the show Looped with 4 time Emmy Winner Valerie Harper.   Valerie Harper will also be serving as one of the Celebrity Grand Marshall's of Capital Pride.

On one of the free nights during the tournament, all should consider going to see Looped at Arena Stage.

Looped is about Tallulah Bankhead, the original celebrity bad girl, who enters a studio to re-record (or "loop") one line of dialogue for her final film.  What ensues is a showdown between an uptight sound editor and the outrageous legend.  Southern, but by no means a belle, Ms. Bankhead was known for her wild partying that rivaled even today's superstars, including innumerable affairs with both male and female celebrities and outlandish exploits too scandalous to mention.  Relish in the outrageously naughty wit of this sultry-voiced stage and film star as she gets Looped!
