World Class  Fields Await IGLFA 2009 Participants!

IGLFA 2009 players are in for a real treat, with the Washington DC area's finest fields lined up for this years' gay and lesbian soccer world championship.

"There will be among the nicest field, if not the nicest, that IGLFA matches have ever been played on," promises tournament director Jim Ensor.

Early round action will happen at the Maryland Soccerplex, a breathtaking wonderland of 21 grass pitches where the MLS DC United and the Washington Freedom regularly train and play exhibitions matches.  Along with the 19 full size grass pitches, there are 3 brand new synthetic turf fields that IGLFA can access if there is inclement weather.

Also, located within the soccerplex is a state-of-the-art aquatic center, complete with a competition pool, a recreation pool, a leisure pool, and two "hydrotherapy pools," that IGLFA participants can access for a $7.50USD daily fee.

Trinity College in Northeast DC will play host to the playoff matches.  Trinity boasts perhaps the nicest grass pitch in the District; visiting teams from overseas routinely train there before facing the US national team at RFK Stadium.  The host committee is in the process of negotiating a DC field to use for the finals. Tournament Organizers are in talks with DC government and DC United to use RFK Stadium.

"We are excited to have this opportunity to showcase the best of our DC soccer community to IGLFA 2009 players and guests," said tournament organizer Melanie Lilliston, "and we are proud to offer high quality fields that befit this important event."

What You Need To Know To Get to DC in One Piece

Your first question may be, how am I going to get to DC? Lucky for you, Washington DC is served by three world class airports - Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (just outside DC), Washington Dulles International Airport (26 miles from Downtown DC), and Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (33 miles from Downtown DC).

Getting to Downtown Washington DC from any of the three major airports is rather simple.  From Reagan, a cab will cost your around $20USD to get to the Tournament's Host hotel (Marriott Wardman Park). You also have the option of taking the famed Washington DC Metro.

Getting to DC from Dulles and Baltimore is a bit more complicated, but still not that difficult.  From Dulles, you can take a Washington Flyer taxi for about $60USD.  You also have the option to take Washington Flyer Coach Bus to the Metro.  From Baltimore, you can choose to take a free shuttle to the MARC BWI Rail Station and board a quick train bound for DC.  This option should cost you about $6.  You will arrive in Union Station in DC and have the option to take the Metro of a taxi.  Lastly, from both Washington Dulles and BWI you have the option to take the Super Shuttle.  Most shared van rides on the Super Shuttle range from $33USD - $40USd.

For those of you in the U.S. who don;t like to fly, you have a few options on Amtrak.  The Northeast Corridor (from Boston, NY, Philadelplia to DC) has very regular train service. There are also from fun options on Amtrak from Chicago to Miami.  It's a great way to have a new experience to see the country.

We would also like to give a hearty welcome to our friends from Czech Republic, Hungary, Malta, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia, and South Korea!  These nations are the latest to join the United States Department of State's Visa Waiver Program, a security pact that allows visitors entry into the United States for 90 days business or please without a Visa.

Keep an eye out for more information in our upcoming newsletters, where you will get important information on getting to DC from outside the US and tips on getting around once you actually get to DC! We will also throw in some tips on what to wear in DC in  June, as well as some scrumptious little bits of useful info!
